EXTERNAL FIREWIRE HARD DRIVE INSTALLATION FOR PC
This is a new hard drive and must be partitioned and formatted before use

Win 98, 98SE & ME Installation:
1. You must have a Firewire card installed on your PC and the Drivers installed before proceeding.
2. Connect the Firewire cable from your Firewire hard drive to a Firewire port on your computer.
3. Go to the start menu, select programs and open MS-DOS Prompt.
4. At the DOS prompt type FDISK and press enter.
5. You will be asked if you wish to enable large disk support. Type Y and enter.
6. From the new menu select option 5 "select hard drive".
7. From the next menu select your new drive and enter. Note: your new drive will show 0% usage.

Note: Due to FDISK limitations, drives over 60 GB's may show wrong capacity. After the drive has been partitioned and formatted the entire drive is available.

8. Select 4, display partition information, from this new menu. Be sure that it says No Partitions Defined. Press escape to continue.
9. Choose option 1, create partition, press enter.
10. At this new menu select create extended partition press enter. When FDISK finishes verifying your drive press enter. When you get the message extended partition created press escape.
11. When you get the message, no Logical drives are defined, press enter. FDISK will again verify your drive. When FDISK finishes press enter. You will get a message that all available space is assigned to your drive.
12. Press escape, this will take you back to the 5 option menu. Press escape again you will get the prompt that you must restart you computer for the changes to take effect. Press escape again and type EXIT to leave DOS, reboot you computer.
13. After you computer has rebooted double click on the My Computer icon, then right click on the new icon for your new drive. From the drop down menu select format, and from the next menu select full format. Click on start, a warning message that this will destroy all files appears, click on OK. When format completes your new drive is fully functional.


NOTE: There are two standards in Firewire cables, a 6 pin and a 4 pin. The four-pin connector does not provide power to your hard drive. For notebook drives you will need to purchase a power supply if you have a four-pin connector. The 3-½ inch drive kits come with a power supply. If you have a four-pin connector you will have to purchase a cable, which is configured with 4 pins to 6 pins. These items may be purchased from Bason Computer. USB INSTALLATION PC with Win 2000 & XP

Window 2000 & XP USB hard drive installation:

  1. Connect your USB cable from your USB hard drive to your USB port on your computer.

  2. Power up your computer when windows starts to load it will prompt you that a new device was found and it will search for drivers and install them automatically.

  3. Once in  windows right click on My Computer select manage then drive manager.

  4. You will receive a prompt that will ask you if you want to write a signature to the drive say yes.

  5. You will be at a new screen right click on the new drive choose partition.

  6. Right click again on the drive choose to format the drive select from FAT , FAT32 or NTFS.

  7. After finishing format right click one more time to assign a letter for that drive.

  8. Now you are finished and ready to use that drive.

EXTERNAL USB HARD DRIVE INSTALLATION FOR PC
This is a new hard drive and must be partitioned and formatted before use

Win 98 SE & ME Installation:

1. Connect the USB cable from your USB hard drive to a USB port on your computer.
2. Power up your computer. During the loading of windows you well receive a message that a new device was found and windows will search for drivers. Click on OK.

Windows 98 users go to step 3. Windows ME users go to step 4.

3. From the new options menu select specify location. Specify A:, insert the floppy disk that came with
your USB hard drive and press enter. Skip step four.
4. From the new options menu select search for driver. Insert your ME operating system CD in the CD-
Rom and press enter.
5. At this time your system should reboot to install the new driver. If, your system does not reboot,
reboot it now.

You have finished updating your driver. You will now partition and format your new drive.

6. Go to the start menu, select programs and open MS-DOS Prompt.
7. At the DOS prompt type FDISK and press enter.
8. You will be asked if you wish to enable large disk support. Type Y and enter.
9. From the new menu select option 5 "select hard drive".
10. From the next menu select your new drive and enter. Note: your new drive will show 0% usage.
